Kotoko loose to AshantiGold in Premier League

Obuasi, (Ash), July 11, GNA - Obuasi Ashantigold played an uncompromising game to beat Kumasi Asante Kotoko 2-1 in their 29th Week of Glo Premier League encounter at the Len Clay Stadium at Obuasi on Sunday.

Kotoko were the first to score in the 32nd minute through Daniel Nii Adjei from a free kick which was taken just outside the penalty box after Alex Asamoah was brought down by a defender. It was the only chance that had come the way of Kotoko who had been under incessant pressure from the blast of the whistle by referee Thomas Nunoo in the tension packed match with the home team failing to take the leader.

The goal incensed the Ashantigold fans and it resulted in the throwing of stones and sachet water from the fans from the stands against their Kotoko supporters in the right wing of the VIP stand. The security men who were deployed in their numbers to ensure the safety of players and spectators managed to take control from the stands but as the situation was getting worse, the security had to use the tear gas and indiscriminate warning shots to bring the situation under control

A policeman was hit by an object, as well as many spectators who were rushed to hospital after some of the spectators were removed from their seats and about to do their own thing to any opposing supporter or official.

After tempers were about to cool down, another stone throwing episode started from the right wing of the VIP stand compelling the TV camera man and the line one referee E. O. Ankrah and the players to run to the centre for their safety.

A temporal hold up for about 10 minutes therefore ensured before the game started.

On resumption of the second half, Ashantigold was awarded a penalty when Louis Quainoo fouled Theophilus Anobaah in the box for Nana Yaw to level up the scores for Ashantigold in the 44th minute. During the 12 minutes of added time in the half, Ashantigold who were determined to carry the day to avoid relegation, George Appiah hit the post in the third minute of the time.

With the pressure on Kotoko they Miners managed to take the lead in the dying minutes of added time.

Kotoko exhausted their substitution with the attempt to find the equalizer but the strong defence of Ashantigold built around Frederick Quayson, Nana Yaw, Daniel Asamoah and Seidu Dauda refused to bulge. 12 July 09
