Pick me or I'll quit, warns Yeboah

Hamburg star Anthony Yeboah insists he will retire this summer if coach Frank Pagelsdorf does not want him to play for the Bundesliga club next season.

After a disastrous season - in which Yeboah was plagued by injuries and had a lawsuit filed against him for alleged tax irregularities - the Ghanaian powerhouse is considering bringing his colourful career to a close.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt and Leeds United striker scored just two goals last term and was left out of the squad by Pagelsdorf in the latter stages of the campaign. Now the Hamburg coach is pressing Yeboah to decide whether or not he wants to sign a one-year extension.

"I don't want to cause any trouble for the club," claimed Yeboah. "They were very helpful to me when I had the trouble with the lawsuit. But I need to know where I stand.

"If I was not required I'd pack my bags and leave right away. I wouldn't even ask for more money," he told Kicker.

Yeboah was expected to announce his retirement last month when his contract officially expired. But the Ghana international insisted that he had a clause in his contract that allowed him to extend the deal by a further 12 months - even though the Hamburg management had made it clear that they wanted him to leave.

Yeboah joined Frankfurt from second division side Saarbrucken. He was an instant success and became the first black Bundesliga player to win the golden boot when he scored 20 goals in 1992-93.

He left Frankfurt the following year after falling out with then coach Jupp Heynckes and enjoyed an eventful spell at Leeds before returning to Germany to join Hamburg in 1997.
