Ghana keep World Cup hopes alive

Ghana could yet qualify for the 2002 World Cup after their impressive 2-1 victory over George Weah's Lone Stars of Liberia in Monrovia.

Liberia, on the other hand, suffered a huge set back in their World Cup hopes. It now means that Liberia must beat Sierra Leone away in two weeks time to stand any chance of travelling to Japan and South Korea for next year's World Cup finals.

And Liberia will also need Ghana to act as spoiler again in two weeks when they host Nigeria, who now move one point clear at the top of Group B after a 4-0 victory over Sudan on Sunday.

The signs looked ominous for the home side early on when after a period of pressure Sturm Graz striker Charles Amoah opened the scoring for Ghana after 33 minutes.

Kelvin Sebwe dragged back the deficit a minute before the break.

Before Isaac Boakye shattered the hopes of the 36,000-strong home crowd with his 60th minute strike.

Liberia: Anthony Tokpa, Thomas Kojo, Varmah Kpoto, Oliver Makor, Joe Nagbe, Kelvin Sebwe, George Weah, John Menyongai, Zizi Roberts, Prince Daye, Chris Wreh, Alex Browne, Mass Sarh, Isaac Tondo, and Edward Dixon. (Dixon, and Mass Sarh were not featured). Louis Crayton and James Debbah, nursing injuries, missed out on Sunday's lineup.

Ghana: James Nanor, Isaac Owusu, Ahmed Fattah, Kofi Amoako, Yah Owusu, Stephen Amos, Godwin Ablordey, Issa Mohammed, Charles Amoah (Austrian-based professional), Isaac Boakye, Prince Owusu, Emmanuel Duah, Osoe Boateng, Kenneth Ababio, Charles Asampong, Massah Aminu, Duah Arthis and Kamja Mohammed.
