Gt. Accra outclasses Nigerian team in Int'l tourney

Accra, July 19, GNA - The Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) team completely subdued their Nigerian opponents, Joint Association of Boxers (JAB) team in an international amateur boxing tournament Friday night at the Prison's Canteen, Cantonment.

The hosts won 6-1 and were crowned victors of a tourney dominated by controversial judgements by the officiating officials.

The Nigerian team gave a good account of themselves and gave the hosts a good opposition, but could only boast of Sikuru Ojo's split decision triumph over Raphael Mensah in the bantamweight division.

Hard-hitting Ben Lamptey, captain of the Greater Accra team emerged the fans favourite as his unanimous victory over Abiodum Mustapha was the highlight of the night.

Lamptey was on fire from the onset with a combination of punches directed at the partially shielded face of Abiodum, whose output was not up to standard.

The Will Power Gym product could have stopped his Nigerian opponent in the

first round but Abiodum, survived the heat including counts in the second and fourth rounds.

In the lightweight division, Michael Offei Dodoo maintained his unbeaten run by defeating Kazeen Saka in a seemingly close encounter which saw the former topped on the cards of all five judges.

Ebenzer Sowah beat Ibrahim Kodin 4-1 in a typical "David and Goliath" affair thanks to his technical and tactical abilities in their welterweight clash, while Charles Azumah was awarded a "controversial" unanimous victory over Monsuru Akanji in the Middleweight category.

Youngster Jessy Lartey put the icing on the cake for the hosts with a split victory over Tajudeen Amusa in the flyweight division. The Greater Accra team was presented with a trophy, while each boxer received

a medal and a certificate. The event, organized by GAABA attracted some high profile sporting personalities including Mr. Benson T.Baba, Chairman of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Samuel S. Attuahene, Greater Accra Regional Sports

Development Officer amongst others. This is the second time GAABA is hosting a team from outside after the

Haringey Police and Community team from the United Kingdom last February.
