Ghana to host 2010 AWC?

Accra, Feb 28, GNA - Ghana may host the next edition of the African Women Championship (AWC) in 2010.

Osei Bonsu Amoah, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sports believes the time was ripe for Ghana to host the competition that pieces together the continents best eight.

"With all the facilities at our disposal, I do not see why we cannot host the rest of Africa for the first time in the competition's history."

Mr Amoah told GNA Sports "I think it is high time we hosted the AWC. The Deputy Minister said the dream would however be subject to governmental approval.

"First, we will have to send a proposal to government to seek approval to bid for the right to host the competition." Mr Amoah said his outfit ranks the subject high on its agenda to utilize the newly developed facilities as well as also developing sports generally in the country.

He said Ghana has the pedigree in organizing such competitions and bringing it home would further strengthen the feat.

The Black Queens are still chasing their first gold at the competition with Nigeria and South Africa remaining the only hosts. Equatorial Guinea would host the sixth edition from November 15 - 29 to become only the third country to have hosted the 12-year-old championship.

Nigeria's Super Falcons have won all five previous events with Ghana grabbing bronze on three occasions.
