League clubs association elects vice-chairman

Mr Asamoah Owusu Ansah, 61, a lawyer was on Thursday elected the new vice-chairman of the Ghana Leagues Clubs Association (GHALCA) at their annual congress held in Accra. Mr Owusu Ansah automatically becomes the vice-chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

He polled 28 out of the 93 votes, beating his opponents, Captain Victus Amenyndor (Rtd.), a former chairman of Accra Great Olympics by a single vote and Alhaji Grunsah of King Faisal by three votes, while Mr Akwasi Akyeampong, the representative of Goldfieds had 12. The new Vice Chairman has been one of the representatives of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and a strong advocate of the development of clubs in the lower divisions of the national leagues.

Mr Joseph Yaw Appiah, an accountant, was retained unopposed as the Chairman when other aspirants to the position, Mr David Fugah and Mr Agyeman Duah withdrew their nomination while Mr Richard Quarshie, a business consultant, retained his seat as the treasurer by beating Mr Tahiru Haruna by four votes, polling 48 votes.

The position of Division One League representative on Ghalca went to Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi who polled 77 votes while his opponent, Mr Fred Debrah had 15. Mr Yaw La Danso Addo was elected to represent GHALCA on the GFA when he polled 50 votes to beat Mr Kwame Ntow Fiako who polled 40.

Mr Fred Pappoe, secretary of the Accra Great Olympics and a development planner with DANIDA was elected unopposed when Mr Maxwell Sarfo, chairman of Maxbees was declared ineligible to vote on technical grounds because he had nominated someone else to vote on his behalf. Mr Jordan Anagba also maintained his position as the Division two League representative on GHALCA.

In an interview after the election, Mr Owusu Ansah said his victory was for all the clubs since he would make sure that all clubs are treated equally. "My main focus will be on the development of juvenile soccer, since with a clear juvenile policy, the young ones will graduate into the senior division".
