Mamprobi Old Stars grab Homowo Cup

Accra, Aug. 13, GNA - Mamprobi Old Stars on Sunday emerged winners of the Homowo special football trophy when they beat Ga Mashie Old Stars 5-4 on penalties in a friendly encounter as part of activities to round off this year's Homowo festival.

Ga Mashie led by Ayitey Dormon of Great Olympics fame took the lead in the 65th minute when the former skipper scored from a two-man move to put his die ahead till the end of the first half.

Joe Mensah of Mamprobi Old Stars' capitalized on defensive blunder when he race into the homesters goal area to deliver a power-laden shot to snatch the equalizer for his side in the 80th minute.

When the penalty shoot out was evoked after the match was deadlocked, Mamprobi Old Stars scored all five of their kicks to grab the magnificent Cup while their Ga Mashie counterparts scored four of their kicks.

Nii Tackie Kommey, Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo who presented the Cup to the winners urged the youth to get actively involved in all sporting activities in the area.

He said the area abounds in various sporting talents which needs to be unearthed to reduce the unemployment problems in the area. Former national stars, Kofi Bruce, Awuley Quaye and Adja Tetteh were all there to grace the occasion.
