St. Augustine's and Holy Child emerge champions

Cape Coast, Feb. 25, GNA - Four records were broken in the Zone Three annual Inter Schools and Colleges Athletics competition held at the Central Region Schools and Colleges Park at Adisadel near Cape Coast on Friday.

Marian Aidoo of Holy Child Secondary School broke the 800 metres record in 2m. 30.7 secs to erase the old record of 2m 34.44 secs. set by Cynthia Damtse of the same school in 1993.

Linda Smith of Jukwa Secondary School shattered the 400 metres record in 1m. 02.6 seconds to beat the previous record of 1m. 03.21 seconds set by Mercy Dadzie of University Practice Secondary School in 1993. Marian Aidoo of Holy Child again made a new record in the 1,500 meters when she recorded a time of 5m.14.7 seconds against the age-long record of 5m. 17.7 seconds set by Rebecca Entsil of Holy Child in 1992. Jukwa Secondary School Girls shattered the 4x400 metres record in a time of 4m. 22 seconds as against the old record of 4m.24.9 seconds set by Wesley Girls High School in 2000.

St. Augustine's College bagged 176 points to lift the championship trophy, followed by Asuansi Technical Institute at the second position with 106 points with Jukwa Secondary School following at third position with 81 points while Mfantsipim Secondary School came fourth with 74 points.

Mankessim Secondary Technical took the fifth position with 55 points, Saltpond Methodist High School was sixth with 30 points while University Practice Secondary School came seventh with 27 points.

Twelve Schools took part in the Boys division.

In the Girls division, Holy Child Secondary School lifted the championship trophy with 149 and half points followed by Wesley Girls High School at the second position with 141 points, Jukwa Secondary came third with 128 points, Methodist High School was fourth with 60 and half points, Mankessim Secondary Technical placed fifth with 25 points, University Practice Secondary School sixth with 23 and half points while Efutu Secondary Technical came seventh with 11 points.

Peter Baffoe of Asuansi Technical Institute was declared the best athlete in the boys division after coming first in both the 100 metres and 200 metres races.

Marian Aidoo was declared the best athlete in the girls division for chalking successes in the 800 metres and 100 metres and placing third in the 3,000 metres races.

Certificates and cash prizes were distributed to the outstanding athletes.
