Cornerstone FC upbeat about return to Premier League

Kumasi, Oct 18, GNA - The management of Kumasi Cornerstone Football Club has called on its supporters to be proactive in committing resources towards boosting the Club's financial base as they seek a come-back to the Premier League next season.

Mr Stephen Clement Mawuley, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Club attributed the team's long absence in the Premier League to financial constraints among others and what he said was limited resources at the disposal of the management. The Chairman was speaking to the GNA Sports on the development and the way forward for the Club in Kumasi on Wednesday.

He expressed regret that whereas the management spends nearly four million cedis to prepare the team for league matches revenue from gate proceeds does not correspond with expenditure, adding that this had been the case facing the Club over the years and has been the club's main source of finance.

Mr Mawuley said that the Club often realize as low as about 350,000 cedis as gate proceeds for honouring a league match, stressing that there was the need therefore for the Club's supporters to stand up to their financial commitment to the Club in order to facilitate its development growth.

Cornerstones, since the commencement of the Division One League, (DOL) in which they have been grouped in Zone 2A, have played four games, losing two, drawn one and won one.

Mr Mawuley said Corners has initiated a programme to embark on a rebuilding exercise with the restructuring of the Under 14, Under 17 and Under 20 segments of the team to groom and produce potential stars to serve as preparatory grounds for the Club.

The IMC Chairman further indicated that the technical team had stepped up efforts to sharpen the team's attack which had not been effective in recent matches.

Mr Mawuley said despite the stiff opposition that they may face from their opponents in Zone 2A, the team was committed to making an impression in this year's league and therefore called on the supporters to rally behind the Club.

A powerhouse in Ghana football in the 1970s and 80s, Corners succeeded in unearthing many great Ghanaian talents including 91Golden Boy' Abdul Razak, Stephen Frimpong-Manso, Emmanuel Ampiah and Sampson Appiah among others.

The Club won the West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup in 1987 and had since their relegation to the First Division in the latter part of the 1990s, found it difficult to stage a come-back to the premiership. 18 Oct. 06
