Sunyani (B/A), , - Master Kumi Frimpong, an 18-year- old student of Odumaseman Secondary School, won this year's 'Olympic Day' run at Sunyani yesterday. His time in the 10-kilometre race, held simultaneously at Berekum, was 28 minutes 04 seconds. Daniel Kuranchie, also a student, was second in 29 minutes 45 seconds, and Stephen Amankrah of Future Professionals Athletics Club in Accra and Awudome Four Junior Secondary School, Accra, came third in 29 minutes 53 seconds. In the women's division, Gladys Adomah of Prisons Service, Sunyani, a national athlete, came first. She was followed by Esther Afriyie and Rose Amoah. The Sunyani race attracted a total of 1,500 participants, made up of 1,024 males and 480 females. At Berekum, Charles K. Achew 18, of Dormaa-Ahenkro was first in 31 minutes 44 seconds. He was followed by Yaw Sreche in 31 minutes 50 seconds, and Lawrence Yeboah made it 31 minutes 55 seconds for the third place. Nana Abena Boakyewaah and Kwadwo Twumasi, both four years old, covered the 10-kilometre distance in one hour 50 minutes, 28 seconds and one hour 50 minutes 40 seconds respectively to become the toast of the large crowd. Atta Kwame, a 62-year-old vulcaniser and former footballer, placed 564th. He is on record as the oldest male participant. The youngest runner was three-year-old Bright Obeng Acheampong of Sunyani Glory Day-Care Centre. He was assisted by his mother to cover a quarter of a kilometre. The oldest woman participant, Madam Phillipa Benson, 60, could not rpt not complete the race. The Regional Minister, Mr David Osei-Wusu, thanked the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), the organisers, and Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana Limited, the sponsors, for bringing such an important event to the region. Prizes and certificates were distributed by Mr B.T. Baba, president of GOC, Dr. Deborah Cubagee, second vice-president, and Mr Thomas Tingan, Coca-Cola representative. Among those present were Mr George Owusu, Brong-Ahafo Deputy Regional Minister, Colonel George Brock, Acting Chief Executive of the National Sport Council, and Mr Solomon George Addai, Marketing Manager of Coca-Cola.
