Yeboah reaches settlement on tax evasion charges

BERLIN, July 24 (Reuters)(DS) - Ghanaian striker Tony Yeboah, facing tax evasion charges in court next month, has agreed on a settlement in wich he will pay German authorities 400,000 marks ($200,000), his lawyer said on Monday.

Thomas Kruppa told German sports news agency SID that he expected the trial that had been scheduled to begin on August 3 would now be cancelled.

Yeboah, who plays for Hamburg SV, allegedly failed to pay tax on 2.3 million marks ($1.1 million) he received after extending his contract with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1993. "I trust that the (the money will be paid) and the trial will be called off before the first court date on August 3," Kruppa said. The second court date was set for August 8. Yeboah, 34, would thus be able to play in Hamburg's Champions League qualification match on August 8 at either Brondby or KR Reykjavik.
