Essien wins another league title

... Three in a row
Michael Essien's club, Chelsea, retained their Premier League title on Saturday when the champions beat Manchester United 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

The result left Chelsea with 91 points and an unassailable lead of 12 points over second-placed United with two games left in the league season.

Essien celebrated a personal milestone of three league titles in a row. He won the French league with Lyon in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons

The Blues become only the second team - after man United - to successfully retain the Premiership title.

MICHAEL ESSIEN'S INFLUENCE

BBC -- Eidur Gudjohnsen was a key man for Chelsea last season, playing as a link between midfield and attack.

This season, the Icelandic forward's role has been much diminished, with Michael Essien the main beneficiary.

Nevin says the Ghanaian's influence has changed the spine of Chelsea's team - and made the Blues a more combative outfit.

"The Gudjohnsen role still can be used - and has been, if rather infrequently," he said.

"He has come in and done a decent job when required. But Essien is much more an all-action midfielder who can do the whole job in midfield from back to front.

"I think he will be an even bigger influence next season than he has been this season.

"If anyone is going to make way for Michael Ballack next season, I think it will be Gudjohnsen.
"Gudjohnsen has a role and plays it well. But should Mourinho want to use that role, Ballack will be able to play it better than Gudjohnsen."
