Women's soccer project launched at Obuasi

Obuasi, July 29, GNA - The first ever women's soccer project aimed at mentoring young women to appreciate good morals and to lead disciplined life through soccer has been inaugurated at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

Subayo Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in New York, United States of America with Miss Mbumwae Suba-Smith as the founder, is the initiator of the project known as Subayo Women's Soccer Project.

The project which started in May this year has so far recruited 45 young ladies from Junior and Senior High Schools in and around the Obuasi Municipality.

Miss Suba-Smith said the Subayo Foundation, which aims at promoting the interest of women and children in all spheres of life, started its operations in 2001 in the Volta Region. Mr Gregory Schwedock of Hamilton College in New York and a Board Member of the Foundation said young ladies had the potentials which needed to be developed.

Mr Frank Boateng, the local Manager of the Soccer Project, told the GNA Sports that "we are seeking to get some form of assistance by linking the players to football clubs abroad". The Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Beatrice Boakye-Ansah Prempeh, cautioned that soccer and bad habits do not go together and therefore urged the women to make discipline and good morals their watchword.

She said the Soccer Project was a laudable idea in finding ways of complementing government's efforts towards the delivery of quality education to the young ones, especially girls. Mrs Prempeh said it takes a healthy, well-educated and disciplined people to make a healthy nation and that was why sports and games have been included in school activities.

The Municipal Director of education said that the soccer project would go a long way in assisting the girls to attain greater heights as far as their chosen career was concerned. Mrs Prempeh commended Miss Suba-Smith and the Subayo Foundation for the project, saying "this is a fine opportunity for our girls to make good use of it".

In two separate games to climax the inauguration, Subayo Ladies whipped Together As One Fund Club Ladies 5-0 and added Universal Keep Fit Club Ladies with a 3-0 spanking.
