Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has explained why the government cannot dissolve the Ghana Football Association (GFA), following growing calls for the football governing body to be dissolved after the Black Stars’ recent defeat to The Gambia.

Speaking on the issue, Kofi Adams said the GFA is a registered entity and that the government does not have the power to simply dissolve it.

“Government cannot dissolve the FA because it's a registered entity that pays its taxes and everything that they are supposed to pay to the appropriate authorities,” he said.

According to the Minister, the government could only take action if the association is proven to have been used to commit a crime.

“If, however, they use that group to commit any crime and it is proven that the group has been used to commit any crime, the necessary rules will apply,” he added.

Kofi Adams also explained that although the national teams are under the supervision of the GFA, they belong to the Ghanaian public, giving the government a legitimate interest in how they are managed.

He said FIFA’s statutes make provision for cooperation between governments and football associations through a standard cooperation agreement.

“FIFA itself has made provision in FIFA's statutes for what they call the FIFA standard cooperation agreement, in order that it makes space for government who spends money and because the national teams belong to them to have a certain relationship with the FA,” he said.

The Minister added that government intends to push for such a relationship while ensuring that the public interest committee works in the interest of Ghanaians.
