Senegal coach Aliou Cissé has resigned from his role as head coach of Libya after a short stint with the team, announcing his departure on April 8, 2026, amid controversy.

Reports indicate that the resignation stems from off-the-pitch issues that have caused unrest within the national team.

It was revealed that Cissé and his backroom staff had not been paid for eight months despite their service to the nation, and authorities failed to take action.

This prompted the coaching staff to threaten legal action against the Libyan Football Federation (LFF), which eventually forced the federation to pay part of the salaries to ease tensions.

Cissé took over the Libya national team job in March 2025, signing a contract until 2027 with the aim of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

However, due to the controversies, the coach, who famously led Senegal to their maiden AFCON title in 2021 (played in 2022) decided to step down.

Cissé did not outline his next steps but expressed gratitude to the Libyan Football Federation, the fans, and those who supported him during his tenure.

The LFF has yet to comment on the resignation or outline plans for appointing a new coach to guide the team through the 2027 AFCON qualifiers as they continue their quest for glory.
