WAFU Cup: Togo are the Champions

Liberia Thrash Ghana 3-1 in 3rd Place Game

Togo defeated defending champions and hosts Nigeria 3-2 to win their first WAFU Cup title on Saturday evening in Abeokuta, western Nigeria.
Liberia defeated Ghana 3-1 to win the third place match
The Sparrow Hawks took a two goal lead to stun the home crowd before the Super Eagles clawed their way back into the game at 2-2.
Lalawele Atakora, hero of the semi-final game against Liberia, scored the first goal for the Hawks in only the second minute of the game with a header that beat goalkeeper Sunday Rotimi.
Togo went ahead 2-0 twenty minutes later when Atakora supplied a pass to Wome Senome before Bartholomew Ibenegbu scored a brace to hand Nigeria a lifeline.
Ibenegbu scored his first on 22 minutes and the second from a penalty on 45minutes. Just when the Nigerians thought that they were going into the break on a high, man of the match Atakora scored the heart-breaker from a free kick three minutes into added time.
It was Nigeria's first defeat under Samson Siasia. The champions smiled home with 50,000 dollars and a trophy while Nigeria pocketed 25,000 dollars. The next edition of the competition will be hosted by Ghana.
