Carlos Alcaraz has made a strong return to the US Open, defeating Roman Safiullin in straight sets to begin his title defence on a winning note.

The defending champion overcame the Russian 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, producing a composed performance in his first competitive singles match in 139 days.

Alcaraz had been sidelined with a right wrist injury, raising questions about whether he would be able to rediscover his rhythm immediately on his return.

Those concerns were quickly put aside as the Spaniard controlled the match with his powerful groundstrokes and trademark intensity.

Despite Safiullin's efforts to stay within touching distance, Alcaraz remained in control throughout and closed out the contest in convincing fashion.

The victory represents an important first step in Alcaraz's attempt to defend his US Open crown.

Having already established himself among the leading figures of the men's game, the Spaniard is once again among the major contenders for the final Grand Slam title of the year.
