The University of Ghana on Saturday emerged winners of the soccer division of the 2013 5th Mini Ghana Universities Sport Association (GUSA) games which was hosted by the University for Development Studies (UDS) at the Tamale Sports Stadium.
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) placed second in the soccer competition but emerged the winners for the athletics.
The week-long event saw all the public universities including UDS, UG, UMaT, KNUST, UPSA, UCC, UEW participating in sports and athletics.
Mr. Kwaku Prempeh, Technical Director for the GUSA Games, said 25 players had been selected from the participating teams to constitute the country’s team for the 2013 Federation of International University’s Sports (FISO) to be staged in Kazan in Russia in July.
He described this year’s GUSA games as one of the best since it was quite competitive noting that 20 athletes had also been selected for the FISO games.
Mr. Albert Yawson, acting President of GUSA, commended the participating teams for displaying good sportsmanship throughout the tournament and encouraged them to pursue their academic activities dispassionately.
He said GUSA organised a number of events in 2012 including - GUSA in January at KNUST, cross country competition in November at Legon, two general assembly meetings in UG and KNUST and would organize similar events this year.
Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, Pro-Vice Chancellor for the UDS, congratulated all the participating teams and wished them well in their endeavours.
