Two Ghanaian athletes for Youth Olympic Games

Accra, Aug. 3, GNA - Two Ghanaian athletes are to carry high the flag of the country at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

The athletes, Atsu Nyamadi and Rita Leona will participate in track and fields events at the maiden edition of the global youth fiesta.

Atsu, a student of T. I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, Kumasi will participate in the triple jump and long jump events, whilst Rita of the Ghana Army Senior High School, also in Kumasi will vie for honours in the 800 metres and 1500 metres events.

Erasmus Adorkor, Chief Sports Development Officer of the National Sports Council told GNA Sports that the duo are slated to leave for Singapore on Monday, August 9.

He said the duo emerged winners in their respective disciplines at the youth continental Championships held in Senegal early this year.

Adorkor explained that funding for the Games is under the tutelage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with additional support from Government.

The athletics event to be held at the Bishan Stadium will start from August 17 to August 23 with a total of 36 events being competed for.

Players born between January 1, 1993 and December 31, 1994 are eligible to participate in the championship.
