Transfer News & Rumours: Milan welcome Essien

  • Jan 24 --Milan have confirmed on their official website that Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is flying in tonight. “Just turned 31 and with a CV including domestic and Champions League wins as well as victory with the Ghana national side. Michael Essien in expected in the city this evening,” read a statement.It’s reported Essien will sign a contract until June 2015 that will halve the current wages he receives at Stamford Bridge.Chelsea have agreed to release the player early from his contract, so Milan won’t pay any transfer fee.
  • Jan 24 -- Michael Essien is close to finalising a move to AC Milan despite a late enquiry from West Ham. The Ghana international is keen on a move abroad and his agents held lengthy talks with the Serie A club on Thursday as they look to agree terms. The 31-year-old was also considered by West Ham as they continue to weigh up midfield options. (DailyMail)

  • Sulley Muntari committed himself to the AC Milan cause, dampening City’s chances of completing a deal for the midfielder. It was always a long shot, but Steve Bruce has been monitoring the player’s situation at the San Siro and it looked at one stage as though a deal could be on the cards as Muntari has become frustrated with the Italian giants.(ClubCall)

  • Sunderland are looking at bringing Fulham midfielder Derek Boateng to the Stadium of Light. Gus Poyet is said to want the player on a loan deal as he tries to strengthen his squad in readiness for the fight against relegation. Boateng has been unable to command a first team place at Craven Cottage this season and it is believed that the club would be willing to let the player go out on a loan move to resurrect his career. The reports have come from France but before Poyet can sign the 30 year old, he must fight off opposition from French side Evian and Championship club Watford, both of whom are interested in the Ghana international.

  • Jan 16 --Reports, in the morning press, infer that Rafa Benitez, over at Napoli, enquired about the possibility of taking Michael Essien.
    Fabian Piveteau (Essien's Agent): "The player will leave Chelsea and I have had a lot of contact from different clubs, but Milan is not among them, or at least I did not have direct contact with the Rossoneri.   • Manager Jose Mourinho has told Michael Essien that his door is open if he want to leave Chelsea. Essien's future at Chelsea was thrown into doubt when his agent suggested that he could leave the London club due to a lack of playing time. Mourinho, stressed he wanted to keep the player, but admitted that he could not offer the play guaranteed first-team football.
    "I offer nobody - not Michael, not nobody (guaranteed playing time)," the Portuguese said.
    "I understand that players think about national team, the World Cup and playing regularly, but my players have to think of the team before the players. Michael knows that perfectly."
