Tournament Ends in Bedlam

A soccer match between Fauzan FC and Mfantsiman United to open the Central Region Division Two Super zonal promotion soccer competition at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Monday, ended in a bedlam when players and supporters of Mfantsiman United turned the stadium into a boxing arena.

They attacked Cape Coast based Class One referee Essel Walker and other match officials and later smashed windscreens of two vehicles which brought Fauzan FC players and supporters to the stadium.

It all began when players of United protested against a goal scored in the 88th minute by Fauzan FC on grounds that the referee had ignored an earlier infringement against them before the goal was scored.

Infuriated by the referee's stance of allowing the goal to stand, the United boys led by their right half back, Abubakar Halidu, started punching the referee until the police went to his rescue.

When sanity was installed, two players of United, Ekow Benson and David Dartey were given march off orders by the referee.
