“This season is my last,” he said in his podcast, Einfach Mal Luppen. “I’m convinced that this is the correct decision for me. I’ve thought for many months about what to do, and the truth is that there are pros and cons like always, but I’m convinced it’s what I want to do.

"I always had the idea of leaving this club in the best way; this season is one of the best I’ve played, so it’s a good time to leave. When I leave Madrid, I leave football. That’s what’s going to happen. I will play in the European Championship with Germany, but I have never thought about changing clubs.

"I’m grateful for the last 10 years, the support, which makes this club and its fans special, and that’s why I’ve felt at home in the club, in Spain, and here in Madrid.”
