Toney fights Nigeria’s King Sunny

THE controversial amateur story of boxer James Toney will make a crucial professional turn against Sunny King of Nigeria at the Kaneshie Sports Complex next Friday.

Toney, who missed the Sydney Olympics due to a strange error, is poised to emulate his colleague, Joseph Agbeko, and will challenge the Nigerian Champion for the vacant African Boxing Union (ABU) middleweight championship title.

Toney, the 1998 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist who controls the nation's middleweight division is leaving no stone unturned to wrest the vacant title.

The Nigerian champion, an equally good opponent, who is a Commonwealth-rated boxer has been tipped to give Toney a tough time.

The bout dubbed "Ogya Night" is being organised by Prince and Baseline International Promotions Syndicate and it is expected to receive an attractive patronage due to the crack pairings on the bill.

Toney, who has been christened 'Hot Ice' due to his deadly punches is likely to exhibit superior technical ability to dispose of his opponent.

Next in attraction will be the national lightweight clash between Ben Neequaye alias Brown Bomber and Joseph "No Mercy" Sarkodie of Panther Club, Bukom.

In the national featherweight division, Ben Odamettey will be forced to produce all his miracles against Moubi Armstrong who is ready to give him a stiff opposition.

In the other bouts, Brimah Komoko will battle Ibrahim Marshall in a catchweight contest, while Ayittey Powers engages George Amuzu in a crucial superwelterweight contest.

The welterweight contest will be a fierce encounter between Alfred Tettey and Joe Coffie, while the Golden Boy, Osumanu Akaba will feature against the ‘Rubber Legged’ Adamu Mohammed.

Rates for the evening are ringside ?30,000 second ringside ?20,000 and popular stand ?10,000.
