Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has insisted that Ghana’s shocking 4-2 defeat to The Gambia does not make him a loser, despite the disappointing result in Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium as The Gambia staged a remarkable comeback to compound the Black Stars’ difficult start to the qualifying campaign.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Queiroz admitted that he and his players were deeply disappointed by the result and apologised to Ghana’s supporters.

“There is not so much to say today after the terrible result for us. Myself, the staff, all the players, we are deeply sad, deeply sad with the result that happened here today. And we have to say sorry to our fans, to our supporters. This was one of those days that everything went wrong with our team,” he said.

The Portuguese coach was then asked whether he would consider resigning from his position following the defeat.

Queiroz said he would be willing to step aside if that would genuinely provide a solution for Ghana football, but stressed that the decision ultimately rests with the Ghana Football Association while insisting the defeat does not define him.

“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation. This result does not make me a loser,” he added.

The defeat leaves Ghana with back-to-back losses in their opening two AFCON qualifying matches after they also lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké.

Queiroz now faces growing pressure to turn around Ghana’s campaign in the remaining qualifiers.
