The year 2001 was the greatest moment in my career - Sammy Kuffour

Former Ghana defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has described the year 2001 as the greatest in his career.

The Bayern Munich legend is one of few Ghanaian players to play and excel in mainstream Europe.

Kuffour also belongs to an enviable league of Ghanaian footballers to have won the UEFA Champions League winner’s medal.

The 43-year-old won a total of 15 honours in his career (14 comings with Bayern Munich) and also clinched some top individual awards.

Of the illustrious years he’s had on the pitch Sammy Kuffour has specifically mentioned the 2001 season as his best ever.

He told goal.com “I think 2001 was the greatest moment of my career because it was a year of gold for me because 1991 we [Ghana U17] won the World Cup and in 2001, I won the Champions League,”

“And then I won the [BBC] African Player of the Year, the Ghana Player of the Year, the Ghana Sportsman of the Year, I won the Intercontinental Cup in Japan [where I won the Man of the Match] and got a car. So for me, 2001 was an incredible year for me.”

Aside Bayern Munich, Kuffour also represented clubs like AS Roma, Ajax Amsterdam and Livorno.

He was a member of Ghana’s squad that made the 2006 FIFA world cup.
