Black Stars head coach, Carlos Queiroz has defended Ghana’s style of play following criticism of the team's conservative approach in the 1-1 draw against Wales on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, insisting that winning matches matters more than dominating possession.
Ghana spent large periods of the friendly against Wales without the ball and often sat deep in a compact shape, allowing Wales to control possession and dictate the tempo of the game.
Despite the criticism that followed, Queiroz made it clear that he does not judge performances based solely on possession statistics.
Speaking after the game, the Portuguese coach pointed to the recent Champions League final between Arsenal and PSG to support his argument.

“We saw in the Champions League final where one team had 70 or 80 per cent of possession, but the game is not only about possession,” he said.
According to Queiroz, football should ultimately be measured by results rather than aesthetics.
“The game is about having the skill to put the ball in the net, defend your goal, and win the game,” he added.
The former Portugal and Real Madrid manager acknowledged that different coaches have different philosophies, with some preferring possession-based football while others favour a more direct approach.
“Some guys like to enjoy ball possession, others like straightforward or direct style of play and create a good combination and opportunity to score and win the game."
“Football is the winning business, the way we win, I don’t care, I just want to win,” he said.
With the World Cup now approaching, Queiroz believes supporters will judge Ghana on results rather than playing style.
“When we win, the fans are happy, the country is happy. We play to make them happy,” he added.
