Sunyani Polytechnic to host games

Sunyani, Oct. 21, GNA - Sunyani Polytechnic is to host the 3rd edition of the West African Polytechnic Games Association (WAPOGA) scheduled for September 2010 and will last 12 days. Eight countries are expected to participate in football, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, tennis, athletics, judo, swimming chess and taekwando. The participating countries are Ghana, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Iviore, Mali, Senegal and Nigeria, said Prof Kwasi Nsiah-Gyabaah, Rector of Sunyani Polytechnic and President of WAPOGA, at a press briefing in Sunyani on Tuesday. He said as a host nation more than GHC 200,000 was needed urgently towards preparations more especially in the construction of a stadium at the polytechnic. Prof. Nsiah-Gyabaah appealed to the government, philanthropists and organizations for support. He said WAPOGA was established in 2000 to bring together all polytechnic institution in the sub-region to promote cultural and regional integration. He said Yaba College of Technology in Nigeria hosted the maiden edition and that the games were organised in every two years. Prof. Nsiah-Gyabaah said the games were postponed since 2004 and that it was Cote d'Iviore which hosted the 2008 event. He said eight polytechnics from Ghana participated in the just ended competition and expressed the hope that in 2010 all the polytechnics in the country would participate.
