Tyranny against workers?

May Day celebrations in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital had to be abandoned after an unnecessary show of force by the Police reports The Statesman.

According to the paper, armed police in Tamale, backed by armoured cars intimidated workers in the town causing them to abandon the celebrations. As early as 7.00 am, the steel-helmeted police, armed to the teeth, and loaded in twelve trucks and armoured cars, patrolled the major streets of Tamale in a show of unnecessary force. The police action is said to have been ordered by the Regional Minster to forestall any demonstration by workers. And, knowing that the Tamale police aim warning shots often at human beings rather than firing into the air, many people stayed in doors.
