Starlets cool Off On Dodi Princess

Akosombo (Eastern Region) 2 Oct.,

The Black Starlets, silver medallists at the just-ended Fourth FIFA/JVC World Youth Championship in Egypt, were yesterday given a special treat by the Volta River Authority (VRA) on the Volta Lake at Akosombo. The Starlets had a four-and-half hour cruise on board MV DODI PRINCESS under the command of Captain Moses Kwawukume from Akosombo to Dodi Islands in the Volta Region. The treat was a promise by President Jerry John Rawlings when the Starlets called on him at the Castle last Thursday to show him their silver medals they won in Egypt. The two-time champions (Starlets) lost 1-2 to their Brazilain counterparts in the finals. Led by Mr E.T. Mensah, Minister of Youth and Sports, the players and their handlers enjoyed themselves to dance-band music provided by the Ankobra Band, based at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra. Later in a chat with the players, Mr. Mensah said "the years of waiting before showing our appreciation for excellence are gone. "Taking into account the facilities at our disposal, it is no mean achievement to emerge second best in the world," he added. Mr. Mensah urged sportsmen in general to give of their best and be prepared to die a little for the nation. Mr. Fred Osam Dodou, General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association accompanied the Starlets.
