Sports Stadium too small for School of Sports and Exercise Medicine

Ho, Feb. 15, GNA - The Volta Regional Sports Development Officer, Gabriel Yao Missodey has suggested to government to build a new Sports complex for the Sports and Exercise Medicine School under the proposed University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho. Mr Missodey observed that the current Ho Sports Stadium could not serv= e the needed purpose due to its limited land size.

The Regional Development Officer who made the suggestion in an interview with the GNA Sports in Ho on Tuesday, said the Sports Council has acquired a sizeable plot of land near the Volta Regional Hospital which could be developed into the Sports and Exercise Medicine School of the upcoming University.

Mr Missodey explained that a Sports complex of the proportion envisage= d comes with several facilities which the 53.36 hectares of the Ho Stadium could not contain. "At the moment, the Stadium cannot contain two football fields as demanded by the growing population let alone other facilities," Mr Missod= ey stated. He said the new site, which has already gone through some level of registration is about 93one mile square" and appropriate for a sports co= mplex with additional facilities to support the School.

Mr Missodey said the nearness of the site to the Regional Hospital was an added advantage and urged government to consider the Regional Sports Council's proposal to develop that site.

He said the development of the site and other sporting facilities were under the Council's four-year strategic development plan and hoped the construction of such facilities would boost sports in the Region.

Mr Missodey urged all District Sports Councils in the Region to take a cue from the 91fresh wind blowing' in the sporting arena in the Region a= nd re-organize their activities and programmes to reflect the times.

President Evans Atta Mills said at the sod cutting ceremony for the proposed (UHAS) on Monday, February 7, that his administration was to secur= e funds to refurbish the Ho Sports Stadium into a sports complex to 93add a lot of depth to the School of Sports and Exercise Medicine" as part the new University.
