Sports Media schooled on Ghana Education Service Sports Policy

The Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has organized a forum for sports journalists in Accra. The seminar was aimed at extolling the benefits of teaching physical education as a subject and the relationship between physical education and sports at the school level. The GES in partnership with UNICEF, the British Council and the Active Healthy Kids of Ghana rolled the policy document, dubbed Physical Education and Sports Policy, which explained the relationship between PE and Sports and the benefits of studying PE and practicing it by students. Professor Reginald Ocansey, a retired professor of Brookport University of America, called on sports journalists to educate the public to know the difference between Physical Education and Sports and the need to include PE in all our school activities. The policy which will ensure that Physical Education is singled out at the basic school level as a subject is expected to be endorsed by the Ministry of Education for the Ghana Education Service to issue instruction for its implementation in schools. “We hope to build a strong future with a healthy labor force and we need to implement policies like these to streamline the future of our sports as a country”, Professor Ocansey said. About 60 media men and women who report on sports attended the event held at the GES conference room and they expressed their feeling s on the seminar. Mac Paradise Okocha of Happy FM said it was a good meeting for the sports journalists to be trained and informed on what is happening in the schools with regards to sports. Nii Maale Adsei, a Freelance sports writer said the proramme is worthy and he praised the GES and the sponsors for coming down to educate the media men Gloria Commodore, a veteran sports journalist and member of SWAG said more of such interactions bring sports organisers and the media closer and it is good for sports promotion and development. Other speakers were drawn from Right to Play and UNICEF and they congratulated the media men for their massive turn out at the programme.
