Ghana’s lightweight boxer Richard Commey has praised Belgian boxer Hedi Slimani for giving him a good run for his money in their WBC lightweight fight that happened on Saturday at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The two men were involved in feisty and gruelling fight that saw the Ghanaian emerged the victor after 12 rounds. The 3-member jury ruled 116-112, 117-113, 116-112 all in favour of the ‘Azonto boxer’. The unanimous victory by Commey extends his impressive record to 25 victories.

Speaking exclusively to Ghanaweb after the hugely patronized bout, Commey praised Hedi Slimani for handing him a good fight which he believes brought the best out of him even though he was nursing an injury.

Commey revealed he was unsurprised by the quality displayed by the Belgian because of the impressive records he boast of.

"It was a great and tough fight and that’s the kind of fight of I expected from Slimani because his records speak for themselves. I’m glad to have tested my mettle with such a great fighter. Unfortunately I picked up an injury that made things a bit difficult. This was a historic fight and I wanted to be part of it. I could not afford to miss this historic opportunity."

The bout between Commey and Slimani was the climax of a night of great boxing display dubbed ‘freedom night fight’ which forms part of the 60th anniversary celebration of Ghana’s liberation from colonial rule.
