Sharks and Hearts share spoils at Accra

Sharks drew first blood through Joseph Mensah in the 59th minute Sharks drew first blood through Joseph Mensah in the 59th minute

Elmina Sharks denied Accra Hearts of Oak the chance to record a third straight victory in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) by holding them to a 1-1 draw at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The Phobians won back-to-back for the first time this campaign after beating Ashanti Gold SC 1-0 at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi last Saturday, but struggled to beat the Fearsome Sharks who are gradually staking a claim in the league.

Sharks drew first blood through Joseph Mensah in the 59th minute but had their lead cancelled four minutes later with a very brilliant goal from Winful Cobbinah to put the Phobians back on level terms

The first 45 minutes was an action-packed affair as both sides poured men forward in a bid to break the deadlock. Paul Acquah, who has been in fine form this season, squandered the best chance for the Phobians.

Elmina Sharks could have sealed the lead through Joseph Mensah but an excellent save from Hearts goalkeeper, Samuel Akurugu, denied them the lead that could have sealed victory after a very tensed first-half.

Hearts pressed for the winning goal but were unable to find it. A strike from Ivorian import, Alex Kouami, hit the crossbar in injury time to the disappointment of the vociferous Phobian fans.
