Seven records broken at Second-Cycle Sports festival

Koforidua, Mar. 13, GNA - Samuel Obeng Buabeng of the Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SECTECH) grabbed two of the seven records broken at the end of this year's edition of the Eastern Regional Second Cycle Schools Sports Festival of the Koforidua Zone which ended at Koforidua on Friday.

Buabeng set a new time of 11.15 seconds in the boys 100 metres race to erase the old record of 11.25 seconds set by Alex Quarmyne of Pope John Secondary School (POJOSS) in 2002.

He followed it with another new record of 22.19 seconds in the 200 metres to beat the old time of 22.23 seconds held by Duglo Dennis of POJOSS since 2001 while Jli Garshun of SECTECH threw a distance of 49.19 metres in the javelin to replace the old record of 45.32 metres set by Kwao Roggers of SECTECH in 1998.

In the 110-metre hurdles, Elikem Donald of SECTECH made a new time of 16.19 seconds to beat the old time of 17.06 seconds set by Kofi Danquah of POJOSS in 2003.

In the girls division, Linda Benya of New Juaben Secondary Commercial School (NJUASCO) set a new time of 13.06 seconds in the 100-metre race to beat the old time of 13.28 seconds set by Theresa Koomson of Ghana Secondary School (GHANASS) in 2002.

In the 200 metres race, Benya again set a new time of 27.28 seconds to break the old time of 27.50 seconds set by Milicent Boakye of the same school in 2000.

In the discuss event, Nancy Owusu of GHANASS threw 23.45 metres to erase the old record of 23.08 metres set by Lydia Addo of NJUASCO in 2003.

Benya was adjudged the overall best female athlete for the year for breaking the records in the 100 and 200 metres races and being part of the team that won the girls 100 x four metres and 400 x four metre races and was presented with a cash donation of 150,000 cedis and a book bursary for one academic year.

Buabeng was adjudged the best male athlete for winning the 100 and 200 metres races and being a member of the group that came second in the boys 100 x four race.

He was also presented with a cash of 150,000 and books bursary for one academic year for his efforts.

In the final results, SECTECH won the boys division with 164 points followed by POJOSS with 113 points with NJUASCO coming third with 91 points, while in the girls division, NJUASCO came first with 141 points, SECTECH second with 107 points and GHANASS third with 79 points. 13 Mar. 04
