Serena Williams Arrives Tonight

American world women?s tennis star, Serena Williams, accompanied by her mother Oracene Williams, is expected to arrive in Accra today for a three-day visit.

The 25-year-old will be making this very first visit to Ghana as part of an African tour. Topmost on her programme will be a short tennis clinic she will be co-ordinating on Monday afternoon at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club.

About 60 girls below age 16 selected from various tennis clubs are expected to take part. According to sources at the US Information Service (USIS), the main objective of the visit is to touch the lives of the less-fortunate children.

Oracene Williams, who visited Ghana some three years ago, toured Amissakrom, a small town near Elmina, and felt touched by the predicament of the less fortunate children there, thus her decision to visit Ghana again, this time with her daughter.

Serena, the younger sister of Venus Williams, has established herself as one of the finest black female tennis players in history with more than 15 career titles.

Prominent among these are the US Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open tournaments. In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Mr Jeff Abeasi, the Chairman of the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA), said ?Serena?s presence here will mean a lot in terms of inspiring the young girls to strive hard to play the sport.
It is believed that this will be a great learning experience for them as well. ?The 25-year-old tennis star is also expected to visit Senegal as part of the tour.
