Second Accra International Motocross on Sunday

Accra, May 10, GNA - The second Accra International Motocross expected to bring together motor cycling enthusiasts from some West African countries will come off on Sunday, May 13 at East Legon. The 22.5km race, which will take place on the Mmai-Dzorm Ashaiman Race Circuit, is expected to attract about 20 participants from Ghana, Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.

Mr Kwabena Asamoa, Communication Manager of Promasidor Ghana Limited, Sponsors of the event, briefing the media on Wednesday said his outfit had put the necessary measures in place to ensure a successful event.

He explained that in order to engender faster times, the track had been resurfaced to bring it close to the near perfect conditions of off-road racing.

Mr Asamoa said the main reason for staging the event was to develop the sport in the country to a level where it would serve as a major source of tourist revenue.

The Communications Manager said Ghana's weather, coupled with its beautiful landscape and vast empty spaces, favours the sport. He dismissed the notion that motocross was a dangerous sport, insisting that participants had been given adequate training and knowledge, while the motorcycles to be used were carefully developed with the safety of the riders in mind.

Eddie Speller Nassar, Chairman of the Accra Motor Club said the nation was blessed with some potential riders, who would soon participate in international events such as the Dakar Rally, among others.

He encouraged the youth to take up to motocross, which also served as a form of exercise for the body like other sports. Promasidor and other collaborators, Pens and Plastics Ghana Limited and Surf Publications have put together attractive packages for outstanding cyclists.

Seventeen year old Peter-Pierrot Fouilleron of the Accra Motor Club is the reigning champion.
