Sam and Evelyn are Independence Day Badminton champions

Accra, March 8, GNA - Daniel Sam of Western Region emerged winner of the Male Singles Division of the Badminton Association of Ghana's (BAG) Independence Day Open Championship, held at the Sports Hall of the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra.

He was followed at the second position by Martin Owusu Adu from the Eastern Region, with Greater Accra's Noah Ayim and Michael Sam of the Western Region picking the third and fourth positions respectively.

In the Women's Singles, Evelyn Botwe of Takoradi picked the first place, with Gifty Mensah of Accra winning the second position, whilst Linda Osei of Tema and Accra-based Stella Amasah won the third and fourth positions respectively.

The Men's Doubles event was won by Eric Attah and Daniel Sam, with victor Sekyi and Aaron Tamakloe winning the second place. Noah Ayim and Felix Amasah paired to win the third place with the fourth place going to Alfred Owusu and Ebenezer Essel. In the Women's Doubles, Gifty Mensah and Stella Amasah won the top most prize, with Linda Osei and Martha Forson settling for the second place, whilst Diana Archer and Evelyn Botwe went for the third position whilst Victoria Asmah and Elizabeth Danquah took the fourth place.

The Under-19 Male Singles saw Richard Aidoo winning the first position with De-Graft Ayisah, Lawton Hamilton and Ernest Larbi winning the second, third and fourth places respectively. Dianah Archer picked the first place in the Female Under-19 Singles, with Grace Atipaka winning the second spot, followed by Nana Ama Ohenewaa and Pearl Mamah.

Ignatius Elletey, General Secretary of the Association expressed satisfaction with the event, and that it has provided them with the opportunity to assess players ahead of national assignments. The event saw about 107 participants vying for honours in the all the divisions.
