Sam Johnson optimistic Ghana will end trophy drought in 2019 AFCON

Former Hearts of Oak defender, Sam Johnson is adamant the Black Stars will clinch the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The four times African champions have struggled to win the trophy after being crowned champions in 1982 in Libya.

Ghana are currently leading the Group F table despite their stunning defeat to Kenya in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi last week.

But ahead of the much-anticipated tournament in Yaoundé, the former Ghana international has called on the team to stay focus and breaking the 36 years trophy-less jinx.

“I believe the players can win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations,” he told Asempa FM.

“The players must stay focus and concentrate. They must stop underrating teams and I know with that they can win the trophy.

“They must know that is their target and I believe the player will be able to deliver.

Quizzed if Ghana football will improve after the work of the Normalization Committee he said, “I believe so because that is what we are all yearning for.”

Ghana kicked off their qualifying series with a 5:0 win over Ethiopia and will play Seria Loane in a doubleheader in October.
