SWAG confers special award on Weah

The Sports Writers Association (SWAG) has conferred special award on 1995 World Footballer of the year, George Oppon Weah (picture far right with black queens) for his contribution and promotion of African football. A statement from the SWAG secretariat on Monday said the twice African Footballer of the year, now resident in Ghana, will be decorated at next year's SWAG awards/dinner night alongside over 20 Ghanaian sportsmen and sportswomen who have distinguished themselves in 2003.

Ghana's ace cyclist, John Zormelo whose name was inadvertently excluded from the list of award winners issued on Sunday, has been named as the cyclist of the year. Also included in the list is Patrick Obeng for Wheel Chair/Special Olympics.

Below is the list the award winners released on Sunday.

3. Team of the year --- Ghana's 4 by 100 relay team
4. Coach o the year --- Abdul Razak of Kotoko
5. Male Footballer of the Year --- Aziz Ansah of Kotoko
6. Female Footballer of the Year --- Adjoa Bayor
7. Dedication and Valour --- Emmanuel Osei Kuffour of Hearts
8. Discovery of the Year --- Akosua Serwaa
9. Promising Star of the Year --- Shaibu Yakubu of Goldfields
10. Joint Goal king of the Year --- Shaibu Yakubu/Kwadwo Poku
11. Top Scoring club --- Kotoko
12. Chairman of the Year --- Ebo Bartels of Table Tennis Ass.
13. Table Tennis Player of the Year-- Nana Yaw Boateng
14. Volleyball Player of the Year --- Casmil Agbenyegah of Kwamerk
15. Cyclist of the Year --- John Zormelo
16. Referee of the Year --- Justice Yeboah
17. Wheel Chair/Special Olympics --- Patrick Obeng
