Rugby League launched in Accra

Accra, March 22, GNA - The Greater Accra Rugby Association (GARA) on Tuesday launched the maiden edition of the Greater Rugby League as part of efforts to promote the sport in the Region.

The League, which is expected to run for four months in an all-play-all format will commence at the University of Ghana pitch, on Saturday, March 26.

In all eight teams are expected to participate in the league, with GARA as the sole sponsors.

Among the participating teams are; Sharks-Osu, Cosmos Buffalos- Abeka Lapaz, Dansoman Hurricanes, Tema Anchors, Sky Hawks-Nungua, Accra Warriors-Abeka Lapaz, Ketu Lions and Spartans-Teshie Tsui Bleoo.

Launching the event, Mr Frank Boahene, Chairman of GARA described the League as a historic one since it is the maiden edition in the history of the sport in Ghana.

He said the commencement of the competition will pave way for the development of the game in the country, adding that even though they are without sponsors, there was the need to initiate the process in anticipation of greater expectations.

The Chairman said the Association has put in place the necessary measures to ensure a successful League since they are bent on staging one of the best events in the country.

According to Mr Boahene the Association has employed the services of medical men and an ambulance as part of the safety measures for the event.

He said they have also made arrangements for the presence of security personnel in a bid to check any acts of rowdy behaviours.

Mr Boahene said the winner and outstanding players after the League will be duly recognized by the Association with trophies but noted added that cash prizes will be added as incentive if they are able to secure corporate sponsorship for the League.

He called on fans of the sport to move to the University of Ghana Park to have fun and enjoy the sport.
