Referee denies aiding Kotoko in FA Cup game

Referee Jonathan Tetteh has denied colluding with Asante Kotoko to rob Rainbow FC in the MTN FA Cup game played last Wednesday.

The Ghana Premier League champions were comprehensive 3-0 winners in the outstanding Round of 16 game played at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Rainbow FC owner Nana Acheampong however claims he overhead a discussion between the referee and some Kotoko players to aid the qualification of the Porcupine Warriors.

Kotoko opened the scoring through a ‘dubiously’ awarded penalty.

The opening strike by defender Kwabena Edusei according to Acheampong, broke the defensive resilience of his side leading to the 3-0 thumping.

Nana Acheampong said: “I was emerging from the tunnel when I overheard the referee tell the Kotoko players to just fall in the penalty box so he could award a penalty.

“And that is exactly what he did. He awarded Kotoko a penalty and from there onwards my team couldn’t recover.”

But referee Tetteh says the allegations made by the Rainbow FC owner are lies.

“I never had any form of discussion with the Kotoko players and therefore I don’t know why the man is making these allegations,” Tetteh told Kumasi-based Fox FM.

“Kotoko won by three goals so it showed clearly they were more stronger than the other side,” he said.
