Violent scenes erupted at Ibrox after Celtic defeated Rangers on penalties to book their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

The ill-tempered encounter had already produced a tense 120 minutes of scrappy football before the drama escalated after the final whistle.

Celtic progressed despite registering just one shot on goal and none on target during normal play, eventually prevailing in the penalty shootout after a forgettable contest between the fierce rivals.

As celebrations began, large numbers of Celtic supporters at the Broomloan Road end spilled onto the pitch.

Around 7,500 away fans were present at Ibrox, marking a return to larger visiting support numbers for the Old Firm fixture.
The invasion quickly provoked a reaction from the Rangers' end.

Supporters from the Copland Road stand surged forward, with several fans, some wearing masks, running onto the pitch toward Celtic players and staff.

Tensions escalated as one member of Celtic’s backroom team was confronted before stewards and police intervened and escorted the supporter away.

In another incident, Rangers fans appeared to square up to Celtic defender Julian Araujo, forcing manager Martin O’Neill to quickly guide the player away from the confrontation.

For a brief moment, the prospect of direct clashes between rival supporters looked possible before security forces managed to contain the situation.

Missiles were also thrown between sections of the crowd, including a flare launched from the Rangers' end toward Celtic supporters. Authorities are now investigating the disturbances.
