Takoradi-based Thomas Quaicoe edged forward to breeze past a total of 40 walkers to emerge winner in the second annual BIRIWAS BEACH WALK held last weekend at Cape Coast in a time of 1:38:10.
Benjamin Annan of Cape Coast clocked 1:38:12 to take second position while Bright Atta of the Ashanti region also clocked 1:38:13 to win the third position.
This is the second of the annual event, which first began last year. John Mensah of Takioradi, John Segbe of Ho, Prince Frimpong of Kumasi, Moses Sherry of Takoradi and Joseph Bello of Cape Coast placed fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth in that order respectively.
Madam Hanne Kleinebudde, manageress of Biriwa Beach Hotel recollected seeing ace walker Vincent Asumang walking on the Accra-Cape Coast highway some years ago, and immediately fell in love with the sport compelling her to provide sponsorship for him. She announced that she has decided to expand the sponsorship to cover others in the sport too.
The manageress hoped the walkers will emulate the dedicated example of Asumang, and strive to do better than he has done over the years.
In his contribution, the Central regional Sports Organizer Mr. Agyare-Gyasi praised Biriwa Beach for their sponsorship package covering over 12 years. He then assured the hotel that he will forward a request to the relevant authorities so that it may qualify for tax rebate.
