Accra, Aug. 8, GNA – Premier League Clubs have been urged to form women’s teams to aid the development and promotion of women’s soccer in the country.

The humble appeal made by the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi during last week’s Ordinary Congress in Prampram is expected to soar interest and support for the ‘neglected’ women’s football.

Though optional, the GFA President appealed to management of Clubs to seriously think through the request, which will serve their contribution to the development of the sport amongst the opposite sex as in Europe where Clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich amongst others boast of female clubs.

Nyantakyi mentioned former premiership campaigners, Sekondi Hasaacas as the only Club with a female team aside the U-20 team for the Reserve League.

The FA President, however, noted that the proposal cannot be enforced in the immediate future due to the economic challenges bedeviling Club administrators and owners.

He said the Clubs are already overburdened with serious financial challenges in the Premier League and the idea of including women’s teams will further worsen their plight.

There was also recommendation by a group suggesting the introduction of a national Women’s League, Women’s FA Cup and Champion of Champions to heighten interest in the women’s game.

Currently, the only competition for women’s football in the country is the zonal national league which features champions from selected regions.
