Football fans on X (formerly Twitter) have descended on popular Manchester United fan Mark Goldbridge for undermining the exploits of Ghana and Leeds United cult hero Tony Yeboah in the Premier League.
Goldbridge, in a post, labelled the Netherlands great Marco van Basten as the Dutch Tony Yeboah, stating that van Basten's career and popularity are tied to a volley he scored in the '80s.
"Overrated. Mishit a volley in '88 and lived off it forever. Just a Dutch Tony Yeboah," he wrote.
The YouTuber and radio presenter's denigrating comments were in reaction to van Basten criticising Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag for spending β¬50M on Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who the former Ballon d'Or winner claimed is not worth 25% of the transfer fee.
Many football fans called out Goldbridge and demanded he show respect to the revered former Ghanaian footballer.
Tony Yeboah was a popular name during his time at Leeds United, where he spent two seasons.
In his first season at Leeds, he scored 12 goals in 21 Premier League games, helping them qualify for the UEFA Cup. He was voted Player of the Year in his second season, scoring a total of 32 goals in 66 matches.
He has a special place in the hearts of Yorkshire club fans who nicknamed him 'The King of the Thunderbastards' for scoring incredible goals.
His volleys against Liverpool and Wimbledon in the 1995/96 season are the most popular goals in his Premier League goals catalogue. The two goals are the reference points whenever Tony Yeboah's time at Leeds is mentioned.
