Playing for Ghana one of the most amazing decisions of my career – Kevin-Prince Boateng

It might not have turned out as he expected but Kevin-Prince Boateng has no regrets over his decision to pick Ghana over Germany.

In one of the most pleasantly surprising news in the lead up to the 2010 World Cup, the German-born Ghanaian who rose through the youth system of German football ditched the Europeans for the Africans.

Kevin would make his debut against Latvia in a pre-World Cup friendly before becoming a favourite of Ghanaians at the World Cup following a string of impressive performances.

His international career took a nosedive after the World Cup with allegations of the former Portsmouth star picking and choosing matches.

Kevin returned to the Ghana squad ahead of the 2014 World Cup and played the country’s last qualifier against Egypt.

It was at the World Cup that his reputation soiled with allegations of him clashing with the coach and being part of a group that caused a mutiny in camp.

He has since then not played a match for Ghana and his ‘lover boy’ status diminished.

But in an interview with Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, the Besiktas forward revealed the underlining reasons in his decision to play for Ghana instead of Germany.

Kevin also said that the decision to play for the four-time AFCON champions remains one of the best of his career.

“When you are young, even though I was born in German, you don’t really know who you are. So that’s why a lot of have a lot of questions. I didn’t feel German 100% and I didn’t feel Ghanaian 100%. I was always in the middle. Football came and opened the doors for Germany and I was proud that I was going to play for Germany”.

“As I got older I kept my brain the way I was and I always said what I thought and it was not always welcome. So there came a time when I thought I was not going to make it with Germany, not because of my quality but because of character doesn’t fit. So I decided to play for Ghana and honestly it is one of the best of my career. To go home to see your roots and see a different culture and play two World Cups was amazing.
