Otumfuo's daughter wins Asantehemaa Golf

OHEMAA AFUA Kobi, nine-year-old daughter of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is the proud winner of the Girls’ Group B event of the 2ND Asantehemaa Ecobank National Youth Golf Tournament.

Displaying exquisite golfing skills to entertain the huge crowd, the Ashanti King’s daughter took the first position with a score of 26, followed by Pemille Kronborg with a score of 28.

Played annually in honour of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afua Kobi Serwah Ampem, the tournament is geared towards promoting golf as a sport among the youth.

Held at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi, the tournament, which had mouthwatering prizes at stake, saw 120 golfers drawn from all corners of the country contesting for honours.

The participating golfers, whose ages ranged from 9 to 16, were drawn from Obuasi, Ankobra, Benso, Tema, Nsuta, Achimota, Kumasi, Baige and D&D. The event was massively patronized.

In the Girls Group A category, Pamela came first with a score of 33, followed by Jessica Ahonon, 38, as Alfred Kyei of Takoradi won the Boys Group A on sudden death after pegging at 42 points with Prince Egyiri.

Richmond Ofori won the Boys Group B with 28 points followed by Michael Opoku, 30, with Targe Sibly winning the Boys Group C after he had tied with Hendrick Groen on 15 points each.

Lady Julia Osei Tutu, wife of the Asantehene, who witnessed the closing ceremony, stressed on the need for golf as a sport to be promoted among the youth of the country.

Aside its huge health benefits, she pointed out that golf imparts key life traits such as honesty, hard work and patience among its players, which are key to success in life.

Larry Dosu, Board Chairman of Ecobank, expressed his outfit’s delight to be part of the Asantehemaa’s Golf Tournament, giving the assurance that the bank would sponsor the tournament next year.
