Nyarko strike propels DC United to victory in MLS

Patrick Nyarko Patrick Nyarko

Ghanaian attacker Patrick Nyarko struck his third league goal of the season to propel DC United to a 2-0 win over New York Red Bulls in the Major League Soccer on Saturday.

Nyarko, 30, scored from a tremendous volley two minutes before the end of first-half at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.

The former Chicago Fire attacker had already been involved in United's early incursions for goals.

The first goal came in the 20th minute. Nyarko supplied a through ball to Marcelo Sarvas alone on the right side of the box. He squared the ball to Saborio for a simple finish that not only put United ahead but put the Costa Rican back in stride after missing two golden opportunities in the first half against New York City FC five days earlier.

About two minutes before intermission, the ball was back in New York’s net. Saborio played the ball through to Lamar Neagle on the right flank. A bending cross met Nyarko on the back side for a clinical side-footed volley that he struck with cannon-like authority.

Nyarko left Chicago Fire before the start of the season to join United and he has enjoyed early season flourish, scoring three goals in 10 league games.

Ghana defender Gideon Baah returned from injury to warm the bench for Red Bulls but attacker Lloyd Sam came off the bench in the second-half to play for the losers.
