National Chess Championship on May Day

Accra, April 25, GNA - The Second National Open Chess Championship for the year 2007 comes off at the North Ridge Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, May 1.

Mr Edward Thompson, Tournament Director of the Ghana Chess Association, who announced this in Accra on Wednesday, said the one-day event, open to chess clubs throughout the country is expected to attract over 100 participants.

He named some of the players who would be battling each other for the trophy as John Hasford Christian Mensah and Gabriel Brown. Mr Thompson said the event, which also forms part of activities marking the May Day, was being sponsored by the Ghana Chess Association. He said the association had lined up a number of competitions to keep players in good shape for the African Chess Championship later in the year.

Mr Thompson asked corporate bodies and institutions to help develop the game in the country.
