The National Sports Authority (NSA) has procured pitch covers for the first time to safeguard stadia across the country and prevent damage during events.
Viral videos show a vehicle transporting the covers to the Accra Sports Stadium, where they were offloaded for storage and future use.
The NSA noted that the delivery was made five months ahead of schedule, following the order placed for their purchase.
The pitch protectors are expected to be used to cover the playing surface whenever events are held at the stadium, helping the NSA to generate revenue to support facility maintenance.
'No free concerts have been secured at the Accra Sports Stadium' – NSA clarifies
Director-General of the NSA, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, had earlier stated that until pitch protectors were acquired, the pitch would not be made available for non-sporting activities and events.
He vowed to ensure that pitches are protected to avoid situations where the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) ban stadiums from hosting high-profile matches.
This development comes as a huge relief to Ghanaian football fans, who in previous years criticised the NSA for renting out stadiums for concerts without using pitch protectors.
